Sleep!

Sleep is one of the most underrated tools to improve performance and recovery. It is so important that early man still slept even though they did not have the secure environment of houses, locks, and security systems. Early man was low on the food chain more prey than predator, and yet from sundown to sunup they slept. It is that important that they sacrificed security to be in an unconscious state. Amazing right?

Sleep is still important today. It is the regulator of many functions:

  • Metabolism
  • Hormones
  • Immune system
  • Energy balance (important appetite and hunger cues)

With poor sleep, we are susceptible to injury, overeating, poor stress management, poor mood, and sickness. There are a number of things that affect our rest:

  • Breathing issues (sleep apnea, asthma, deviated septum)
  • Age-related hormone issues (perimenopause, menopause, and andropause (male menopause)
  • Chronic sickness or injuries that affect comfort
  • Medication and caffeine
  • Mental health issues like anxiety, depression, etc

Have a plan to help you sleep like Clark Griswold driving the family truckster.

  • Finish eating at least two hours before bed.
  • Turn lights low.
  • Turn off your phone and computer 90 minutes before bedtime.
  • Make your room cool and dark.
