Protect Your Hands

By Rob | In Coach's Blog | on July 15, 2013

Sadly the internet and social media is littered with folks that take pride in their hand rips from CrossFit workouts. Since you do CrossFit in Houston, the humidity causes sweaty hands and sometimes sweaty hands cause rips. Rips are painful, bloody and keep you from training, as well as making day to day tasks difficult. While some where this as a badge of honor, the simple fact is that it can keep you from training affecting your results and performance.

Hand Care Matters

The best hand care is preventative. Take precautions by caring for your callouses. You want a good solid pad, with out the dead flaky skin. Dead flaky skin is what leads to rips. Here are som prevention tips:

  • Soak Hands in hot water or from the shower
  • Use pumice stone in the shower or dry hands to use the pumice stone or sand paper callus remover
  • In between use a pediegg and hand care lotion like Cornhuskers lotion or the Ript Skin daily care (you can get the ript skin in the Pro Shop.

Rips and Tears

Take care of your rips and tears as soon as you can, cut away the dead skin. Put something on them to protect the tear, a quick fix like a New Skin or the Quick Fix from Ript Skin to help it heal and protect.

Proper preventative measures can definitely help you avoid tears. FYI there may or a may not be a named workout coming soon(tomorrow  July 16) that can be brutal on the skin. Keep care of your callouses!
