I had the opportunity two years ago with my daughter to walk the beaches of Normandy, visit Pont du Hoc and the American cemetary. I was awestruck about how beautiful and serene the beaches when 67 years ago they were filled with the sounds of war. We had lunch at a nice cafe just 50 yards from where the first tanks were finally able to break through the beachhead. A trip I would recommend to anyone as it is definitely worth the two days we spent in the Normandy area.
