CrossFit Level 1

I have been an avid fitness enthusiast for most of my life. Approximately ten years ago I decided to turn that passion into my profession.  Most of the ten years, I trained out of globo style gyms.

I found CrossFit four years ago and dabbled in it off and on over the years. The workouts intially intimidated me, but I also loved the style. I did not understand scaling, so would only tend to attempt the WOD’s that I felt I could complete.  Only after further study of the methods did I realize the value of scaling to the overall importance to the program. While CrossFit may not be for everybody, with scaling everybody can participate and reap the benefit.

While training for a SEAL Adventure Challenge, I truly discovered the value of completely training in the CrossFit manner. It was through several sessions with Carlos at CrossFit Houston that I totally drank the Kool Aid. Since the spring of “08, I have trained as a “non-specialist”. A funny thing happened on the way, I actually became better and faster at certain sport specific events like the half marathon. As an example, I trained for and ran the ‘08 Houston Half Marathon. I trained very specifically, I ran 4 to 5 times a week with some additional bodyweight training. My time was around 2 hours and a minute. This year I trained with only CrossFit workouts and one long run a week if that. Any other running was the running involved in a WOD, mostly 400 M or 800 M sprints.  Training non traditionally I not only ran 11 minutes faster, but I cut fat and have a more lean and muscular look.

In addition, my workout recovery is much faster. At the age of 41 recovery is pretty important. CrossFit has completely changed my human performance.
